Now that he’s graduated from CC, 2020 Boettcher Scholar Samuel Frykholm ’24 plans to continue focusing on international politics and security through the Master of Science in Foreign Service program at Georgetown University’s Walsh School of Foreign Service. Frykholm will begin the program this fall with hopes of a career in public service in the U.S. Federal Government upon its completion.
“Being a Boettcher Scholar at Colorado College has been a particularly special time for me,” says Frykholm. “Not only have I been surrounded by incredibly talented classmates at CC and a part of a really special campus community, but I am also linked via the Boettcher Scholarship to a statewide community of scholars committed to making a difference in Colorado and the world at large.”
As a junior, Frykholm took advantage of CC’s study abroad program, combined with a Boettcher Educational Enrichment Grant, to travel and conduct research on the recent Russian migration to Turkey amidst the war on Ukraine and the environment of political repression in Russia. “This simply wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the Boettcher Foundation,” Frykholm says.
He also credits CC Political Science Professors Joe Derdzinski, John Gould, and Juan Lindau as being instrumental to his growth as a critical scholar and political scientist. Within the Russian Department at CC, he thanks Mariia Glukhova, Associate Professor Alexei Pavlenko, and Cultural Program Coordinator Elena Belyaeva for their teaching and support.
Frykholm graduates with a degree in Political Science and a minor in Russian and Eurasian Studies. While at CC, he played on the Men’s Soccer team and was a member of both the Refugee and Immigrant Rights Coalition and the Bluegrass Ensemble. He also won the 2022 Department of State’s Critical Language Scholarship for Turkish. During this year’s Honors Convocation, he shared second place for the Alexey Malyshev Russian and Eurasian Studies Award for contributions and leadership that strengthened the CC Russian and Eurasian Studies Program.
